Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a moment of reflection from last night that really moved me. As I was driving home from my mom’s house, tears started streaming down my face, uncontrollably. It’s happened before, and last night, as a song played on my Spotify, I finally had a profound realization about why.
The evening itself was lovely and typical: a bustling, full day at work for me, followed by a mad dash to get Elise her promised “free donut” (a big deal on June 6th!). We then headed to my mom’s for dinner. My stepdad, Toñin, cooked us a delicious pasta with shrimp. There were a few classic family “debates” – like about pepper flakes in the pasta (Elise and my mom both prefer without!) and Toñin’s ongoing confirmations about our arrival time, all of which made for a lively atmosphere. Elise, of course, reveled in Abuelita’s “sweets allowance,” and I practiced letting go of control, letting them enjoy their special bond.
After a few hours of happy conversation, good food, and feeling very connected, I began my drive home. As I listened to “Hoja en Blanco,” a song that brought back a happy memory of singing with my mom and Toñin, my thoughts turned to my biological father, who passed away in 2007.
That’s when it hit me: the tears weren’t sorrow, but overwhelming joy and immense appreciation. My father, even after he left this world, somehow ensured that my mom and I would continue to be surrounded by incredibly supportive male figures. From meeting my wonderful brother, Frank, to having Grandpa Toñin as a constant, loving presence for all of us – including my children – it’s a testament to the enduring love in my life.
I realized those tears were a powerful outpouring of gratitude for all the love that surrounds me and for every single person in my inner circle. Spending time with my people, even with their quirks and occasional exasperations, is truly what brings me the deepest happiness.
Just wanted to share this personal reflection and to invite to reflect with yourself on who your people are, and to appreciate all the ways in which they add value to your life. Hope you all have a wonderful day!
With love, gratitude, and hope.
